Treatment of a Log House Structure in Železný Brod

Treatment of a Log House Structure in Železný Brod

A phase of the restoration of the valuable and well-preserved listed village log house No. 111, built in 1799 and located in the ancient part of the town called Trávníky, was recently completed. During the restoration work, the original and new components of the timber framing were successfully treated with a colorless BOCHEMIT product.

The original timber structures and elements are a significant testament to the craftsmanship and aesthetics of our ancestors. In folk architecture, a thorough knowledge of materials – individual types of wood – played an essential role. In many cases, the most suitable material for a specific use was felled directly on site in carefully selected locations.

When carrying out maintenance and conservation of monuments, the question often arises as to whether it is necessary to replace, for example, timber structures infested with wood-destroying pests with new elements, or whether it is possible to restore and preserve their authentic historical value. In this case, as part of maintenance work on a log house, the original and supplemented wooden parts of the timber structure were treated with BOCHEMIT QB profi, a clear protective agent against wood-destroying insects, according to a design by Martin Volejník.

This listed, predominantly timber-framed house with a non-typical attic extension with log rooms was built in 1799. It underwent structural alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Typologically, the building can be classified as a chamber house with a log living room and a brick chamber section. It is a well-preserved structure and one of the most valuable in the local village conservation area of Trávníky. Since 2017, the house has undergone gradual restoration.
